Food insecurity is a pervasive issue and the fight against it must center those who have lived experience with it. Project Bread is dedicated to confronting hunger through innovative solutions and community-driven efforts. Central to this mission is the Council of Experts, a diverse group of individuals with lived experience of food insecurity.

From May 4 to 6, the Food Research and Action Center hosted the National Anti-Hunger Policy Conference in Washington, D.C., bringing together anti-hunger advocates from across the nation. At this year’s conference, Project Bread proudly hosted a powerful panel titled “Walking Together, Elevating Voices, Amplifying Impact: Project Bread's Council of Experts and Policy Work – A Case Study.” The session showcased our Council of Experts' leadership, a group of individuals with firsthand experience of food insecurity who work alongside us to reshape how anti-hunger work is imagined, designed, and delivered in Massachusetts.

Panelists Leran Minc, Project Bread Director of Public Policy, Levenia Furusa, and Giovanni Zuniga, both Council of Experts alumni, discussed the Council’s story. Council of Experts alumna Paula Tobon moderated this panel, leading attendees through the Council’s journey from formation to impact, highlighting the intentional support, best practices, and deep collaboration that allowed Ambassadors to move from being participants to leaders and policy shapers. Tobon, Furusa, and Zuniga stepped powerfully into their leadership roles, showing how work grounded in community insight and lived experience is a driving force for real, lasting change.

Moderating the panel ‘Walking Together, Elevating Voices, Amplifying Impact’ was a moment filled with emotion and purpose. Standing in front of people from all over the country, sharing how Project Bread works with communities and experts to transform policies and include key voices, reminded me of the power of joining forces.”

Tobon said it was inspiring to hear real stories of impact and see how conversations turn into concrete actions. “It was an honor to be part of this space where every voice counts, and where together we are building a future without hunger, where the key words are ‘justice and inclusion’ regardless of our color, our language, our customs. Where the only thing that mattered was raising our voices to fight hunger together.”

Furusa echoed Tobon’s sentiment about the power of the panel. “Being part of the panel at the Anti-Hunger Policy Conference and participating in Lobby Day was truly life-changing. What made the experience so powerful was the sense of unity. I stood alongside people who have lived through food insecurity, just like me, and together we used our voices to push for real change. We weren’t just telling our stories, we were demanding that those in power listen, and act,” she said.

Attendees left inspired by the Council’s message: ending hunger requires walking alongside those most affected, not ahead of them. Their leadership, experience, and stories are not only powerful but also essential to building just, equitable, community-led, and lasting solutions.

After the panel, Council of Experts alumni Kelly Russell and Elsa Flores joined Project Bread for a day at the Hill, lobbying to protect crucial Federal Nutrition programs such as SNAP.

I walked away from that day feeling empowered and hopeful, knowing that our voices made a difference and that we are not alone in this fight.”
