Levenia Furusa
My name is Levenia Furusa, and I am the founder and executive director of Dwelling House of Hope (DHOH), working diligently to be the helping hand for people in need in the Merrimack Valley by providing healthy food and other resources. I wanted to join Project Bread’s Council of Experts with Lived Experience of Food Insecurity for several key reasons, all rooted in my mission to fight food insecurity and improve the lives of those in my community.
Here are the core motivations that led me to be part of the Council of Experts.
One of the primary reasons I wanted to join the Council of Experts was the opportunity to collaborate with other leaders, experts, and organizations dedicated to addressing hunger. By joining forces with individuals and groups that share my vision, I knew we could amplify the work of DHOH and make a much larger impact in our community.
Project Bread has a proven track record of advocating for policies that address the root causes of hunger. I wanted to be part of a movement that goes beyond immediate relief to create lasting change. By joining the Council, I gained a platform to help influence policy at local, state, and national levels, advocating for systemic reforms that align with my mission of reducing food insecurity over the long term.
Membership in the Council offers access to a wealth of research, best practices, and data on hunger and food distribution. I wanted to tap into this valuable information to enhance the strategies and programs at DHOH. Staying informed about the latest trends and solutions allows us to serve our community more effectively and ensure we’re always at the forefront of addressing hunger.
Joining the Council was also an opportunity to network with like-minded leaders and organizations, building relationships that can lead to new opportunities and partnerships. This network is key to strengthening DHOH and expanding our reach and impact. Collaborating with others who are equally committed to addressing food insecurity can help us explore innovative solutions and create more community-driven initiatives.
Being part of the respected Project Bread Council of Experts elevates the visibility and credibility of DHOH Food Pantry. This recognition helps attract more support through donors, volunteers, or policymakers. It also demonstrates our commitment to being an active and serious participant in the broader movement to combat hunger.
I wanted to ensure that the voices of individuals experiencing hunger and food insecurity are heard at the highest levels. By joining the Council, I can advocate for more equitable solutions that address not only the immediate needs of food pantries but also the underlying issues like food access and economic insecurity. It’s vital to give these communities a seat at the table when crafting long-term solutions.
Finally, I recognized that being part of the Council of Experts would offer valuable professional growth opportunities. I have gained new skills in policy advocacy, resource management, and leadership, which are directly applicable to my work at DHOH. Personally, it is deeply fulfilling to be part of a network of experts and to contribute to a cause that I am so passionate about.
Our Council of Experts plays a vital role in crafting solutions to food insecurity in Massachusetts, working with us hand-in-hand.
