About The Commonwealth

The Commonwealth is a fundraising share program that invites Project Bread's anti-hunger partners to leverage The Walk for Hunger to directly raise funds for their own anti-hunger programs!

Massachusetts-based organizations and programs making healthy food more accessible and/or affordable to low-income residents are invited to participate in The Commonwealth. 

By forming a single team for The Walk for Hunger to represent your organization or program, teams participating in The Commonwealth will retain 60% of the funds raised by their team, with the remaining 40% of funds raised applied to statewide solutions.

Who is Eligibile?

Massachusetts-based organizations and programs making healthy food more accessible and/or affordable to low-income residents are invited to participate in The Commonwealth. Examples include but are not limited to:

  • Food pantries
  • Meal programs
  • Free meal programs for kids 
  • School-based food pantries
  • Backpack programs
  • School gardens
  • Multi-service center's food resource programs
  • Food rescue
  • Farm & garden programs

Use of Funds

Funds should be used for anti-hunger efforts only. This can include general operating for anti-hunger programs. Eligible use of funds: schools, health centers, etc... raising money for:

  • On-site food pantries
  • Micro-pantries
  • Backpack programs
  • School gardens
  • School meals equipment
  • Summer Eats equipment
  • Double-bucks programs at farmers markets, corner stores, etc. 

Funding exemptions: Nutrition education and federally-reimbursable food costs.

How to Join

Enrollment is open!

  • Complete this enrollment form by April 15th, 2025 in order to participate in The Commonwealth.
  • The enrollment form is hosted in Project Bread's grant portal. If you've never applied for a grant from Project Bread or participated in The Commonwealth, you will need to create an account first. 

 

What happens after you submit the 2025 Enrollment Form?

  1. Verification: We'll verify your eligibility within a week of form submission, and you'll receive a welcome email upon approval.
  2. Form Your Team: Follow the instructions in the welcome email to create your team for The Walk for Hunger.
  3. Recruit Teammates and Fundraise: Spread the word to your community via email through your Fundraising Page, or use these social media and print tools to customize and promote to your community. 
  4. Raise $500 by June 30, 2025: Teams participating in The Commonwealth must reach the minimum fundraising requirement of $500 by June 30, 2025 to be eligible for the 60/40 split. 
  5. June 30, 2025 is the fundraising deadline for The Commonwealth. All donations must be received by Project Bread by June 30, 2025 for them to be counted toward the 60/40 split. Donations received after this deadline will support Project Bread's state-wide initiatives.
