Today, Congress passed a long-term spending bill that amounts to the most devastating attack on food security in our nation’s history.
People will go hungry because of this bill. Including right here in Massachusetts.
It strips food assistance from families already struggling to make ends meet. It threatens the health and well-being of millions of Americans—including children, seniors, and people living with disabilities.
This bill:
Takes funds for food away from thousands of parents and seniors who are eligible to receive SNAP (food stamps) by making it harder – almost impossible – to complete burdensome paperwork to prove their eligibility.
Makes refugees and legally present immigrants ineligible for SNAP.
Locks in lower SNAP benefit levels, regardless of future need.
Shifts program costs to states—forcing impossible choices of what to fund, further eroding basic needs programs in Massachusetts.
And this is just the beginning.
The ripple effects will be felt across all nutrition programs—especially those feeding our kids—by making it harder to qualify and access support. This is the single largest rollback of federal nutrition support in U.S. history. Millions will suffer—and the damage will be deep and lasting.
In the face of this cruelty, Project Bread is not backing down. We are doubling down.
We will remain where we’ve always been—in our communities.
This summer, we’ll be in schools and neighborhoods, making sure every child in Massachusetts can get the food they need to grow and thrive. Day after day, we’ll continue partnering with health centers and hospitals to help patients access food and nutrition supports. And we will continue to lead on long-term solutions through our policy work.
We’re expanding outreach to reach every person in need.
We’re working hand in hand with local partners and trusted messengers to make sure people know what help is available—and that they feel safe enough to seek it.
And we’re preparing to lead the fight at the state level.
We’ve been here before. When Congress failed, Massachusetts delivered universal school meals—we helped lead that win. When federal SNAP cuts loomed, we helped deliver supplemental state support. Now, we will again rise to meet the moment. Massachusetts can and must lead the nation. And Project Bread will be at the forefront.
This is a defining moment. The harm will be real. But so is our resolve.
We have the experience. We have the will. Together we will not only respond—we will lead.
With gratitude and determination,
Erin McAleer
