The Walk For Hunger

Sunday, May 5 on Boston Common

The 56th Walk for Hunger

The Walk for Hunger is a community movement to change the face of food insecurity in Massachusetts. Since 1969, on the first Sunday in May, we walk together towards a permanent solution.

Are you ready to channel your inner superhero and start your own fundraiser to power-up hunger relief in Massachusetts? Whether you're a seasoned walker or a first-timer, this is your chance to make a difference for our community and have a blast while doing it!

The Walk For Hunger 2024:

Walk Day Accessibility

All are welcome at The Walk - this year we’re going the extra mile so that everybody and every body feels just how welcome they are. Here’s how we’re making The 2024 Walk for Hunger more accessible for everyone!

The Route:

With a 3-mile, fully paved, and low incline route through Boston Common, this year’s Walk for Hunger is more accessible than ever.

  • The Start Line will be along the paved path, so families and Walk participants with mobility devices won’t have to worry about curbs, grass, or uneven terrain as we kick off The Walk together.
  • We encourage you to take breaks along the way! There are plenty of benches along The Walk route, as well as designated event seating areas, water stations, and snack stations.

  • This is not a race, and the Finish Line can be wherever you want it to be!

  • Remember, every step you take is a victory for the 1 in 5 families with children in Massachusetts who are experiencing food insecurity. This is an event to raise awareness, strengthen our collective commitment to ending hunger in Massachusetts, and celebrate community!

Medical Attention

  • Boston EMS will have a station located at the corner of Charles Street and Beacon Street. Their station will be staffed by paramedics for the entirety of The Walk.

  • If you need medical assistance, you can request support from the nearest Project Bread staff member or volunteer who can get you connected to the EMS station.

Lactation Station:

  • Project Bread has partnered with Reliable Maternity to provide a safe and private on-site lactation station.

  • Reliable Maternity will also have a tent on the Common with more information on their work and resources for parents.

Snack & Water Stations:

  • Along the route, you will find water bottle refill stations and fresh fruit and snacks for refueling on the go!

  • Project Bread has partnered with Cirkul to decrease our environmental impact by providing walk participants with free, reusable water bottles and flavor packs! Massachusetts Water Resources Authority’s Quench Buggy and Boston Water and Sewage Commission’s Water Truck will also be on-site to refill your water bottles throughout the Walk!

  • We’ll also have a food tent and food trucks for delicious (and celebratory!) refreshments to enjoy with family, coworkers, and friends.

Sensory Needs

  • The Walk for Hunger will feature music, games, and speakers throughout the day. There will be plenty of people walking and cheering in the heart of downtown Boston, and we expect that this event will be noisy!

  • We recognize that everyone has different sensory needs, and we will be providing free ear plugs for anyone who needs them at the Information & Resources tent.

Information & Resources Booth:

  • This year, we’re adding a new feature to Walk Day - an Information & Resources Booth!

  • Project Bread staff will be ready to answer any food access questions and provide you with resources on SNAP, our FoodSource Hotline, and any information you may need about The Walk.

Language Inclusivity

  • Project Bread staff will be wearing “I Speak” buttons to help Walk participants identify multilingual staff who can assist them throughout the day at the Check-In, Information & Resources Booth, and the Policy Station.

  • We have created a Walk for Hunger event page in Spanish, and our Walk for Hunger Registration page can be translated into multiple languages through the built-in Google translation widget.

  • We will have ASL interpreters available on-site for both stage programming interpretation and assisting walk participants at the Check-In station.
