Project Bread Hosts State House Panel to Celebrate School Meals For All

5 Years of Feeding Kids

On Thursday, February 26, State Representative Andy Vargas, State Senator Sal DiDomenico, Project Bread, and the Feed Kids Coalition will host a celebratory panel discussion, “Full Bellies, Full Days: A Celebration of Feeding Kids,” at the Massachusetts State House marking the Feed Kids Coalition’s 5th anniversary and showcasing the success of Massachusetts’ permanent School Meals for All program.

Massachusetts is the 8th state in the nation to permanently establish free school meals for all K–12 students, cementing a historic investment in child well-being and educational equity, and this panel will highlight the transformative impact of universal free school meals on students, families, schools, and communities across the Commonwealth while reflecting on the progress made, lessons learned, and the continued importance of protecting and strengthening this landmark policy.

Panelists

Project Bread CEO Erin McAleer, Rep. Vargas, and Senator DiDomenico will deliver opening remarks highlighting how universal school meals drive better health, stronger academic outcomes, and a more equitable Massachusetts. Panelists will then share firsthand perspectives on the program’s real-world impact on student well-being, classroom engagement, and family financial stability and include:

  • Paul S. Haughey, Ed.D., Superintendent of Schools, Spencer-East Brookfield Regional School District

  • April Laskey, SNS, Director of School Nutrition, Billerica Public Schools

  • Jennifer Kasper, MD, MPH, Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Global Health & Social Medicine, Harvard Medical School; Pediatrician, Southern Jamaica Plain Health Center

  • Rebecca Wood, Parent Advocate

  • Addario Miranda, Project Bread Youth Champion
